It's difficult
to imagine life without electricity. But that's how people lived during most of our
nation's history, especially in the country, until the beginning of rural electrification. Borrowing money from the federal government to build lines and provide that service, consumer-owned rural electric cooperatives formed around the nation. Friends and neighbors in Kentucky launched several not-for-profit co-ops. They got together and formed East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC) in 1941 to make and supply the energy they needed. Our purpose today is the same. EKPC doesn't exist to make money. It's here to improve lives.
