EKPC supplies
electricity through three coal-fired stations: H.L. Spurlock Power Station located near
Maysville; John Sherman Cooper Power Station located near Somerset; and William C. Dale
Power Station, located near Winchester. There are also combustion turbines (CTs) at J.K. Smith Station, located in Trapp, near Winchester. The CTs, which run on natural gas or fuel oil, operate when peak electric demand is highest (usually during the hottest and coldest months of the year). EKPC also obtains about 170 megawatts of hydropower through arrangements
with Laurel and Wolf Creek dams and the federal Southeastern Power Administration. Below
is a map showing the system's power generation. The shaded area shows the geographic area
served by the member systems.
