BIG SAVINGS FOR THE FLEXIBLE CUSTOMER
For customers who can reschedule operations quickly or who own emergency
generators, signing a contract for an interruptible rate could be the best way to boost
the bottom line.
Under an interruptible rate, customers would be notified by the cooperative that
a power interruption is to begin at a certain time. The customer would then reduce their
load to a predetermined firm level.
In exchange for being flexible, these customers are given a monthly credit on
their demand charge for all demand above the firm-capacity requirements. The credit amount
varies, depending on the length of the notice required and the maximum number of hours per
year that the load can be interrupted.
In order to qualify, a customer must have:
- At least 250 kW of load that is interruptible

- The ability to interrupt that load with notice ranging from
10 minutes to one hour

- A willingness to interrupt that load for at most 12 hours
at a time in the summer and six hours at a time in the winter, with a maximum of 200 to
400 hours interruption per year
