Pendleton Co. Landfill Plant
Pendleton County, Ky.
East Kentucky Power Cooperative’s (EKPC) fifth
renewable energy facility, a landfill gas-to-electricity plant in
Pendleton County, began commercial operation in February 2007.
The 3.2-megawatt facility (with a future capacity for
4.0 MW) joins EKPC’s four existing landfill gas plants, which will now
produce a total of 15 MW (enough power to serve 15,000 Kentucky homes).
The power generated by EKPC at the Pendleton County
plant and other landfill gas plants is sold through the EnviroWatts
program, which is available from 15 Kentucky electric cooperatives.
Of the 6,000 landfills across the U.S., there are
about 340 with landfill gas-to-electric projects currently in operation.
The Environmental Protection Agency estimates as many as 500 additional
landfills could cost effectively tap methane as an energy source,
producing enough electricity to power one million homes across the
country. EKPC now ranks as one of the leaders in renewable energy
production in the Southeastern United States.
